Vulnerability Disclosure Timeline: ================================== 04/04/2018: Researcher Notification & Coordination (SaifAllah benMassaoud) 06/04/2018: Add More Informations (SaifAllah benMassaoud) 11/04/2018: Vendor Response/Feedback (Intel PSIRT) 24/04/2018: Report Triaged (Intel PSIRT) 30/04/2018: Vendor Fix/Patch (Intel Developer Team) 11/13/2018: Security Acknowledgements (Intel PSIRT) 19/11/2018: Public Disclosure (Vulnerability Laboratory) Discovery Status: ================= Published Affected Product(s): ==================== Exploitation Technique: ======================= Local Severity Level: =============== Medium Authentication Type: ==================== Restricted Authentication (Guest Privileges) User Interaction: ================= No User Interaction Disclosure Type: ================ Independent Security Research Technical Details & Description: ================================ A local privilege escalation has been discovered in the official Intel Media Server Studio software. The vulnerability is located in "intel SDK for OpenCL applications component" and allows unprivileged users to potentially enable an escalation of privilege via local access. The issue is located in the misconfigured permission values in the users authenticated users group. The group/user permission of the path is assigned to the authenticated users group. Local attackers are able to elevate the access permission of the software process by successful exploitation via process injection attack. Proof of Concept (PoC): ======================= The local privilege escalation vulnerability can be exploited by local attackers without user interaction and with system user account. For security demonstration or to reproduce the security vulnerability follow the provided information and steps below to continue. --- Session Logs (OpenCL - PERMISSIONS) --- Medium Mandatory Level (Default) [No-Write-Up] RW BUILTINAdministrateurs FILE_ALL_ACCESS RW AUTORITE NTSystÞme FILE_ALL_ACCESS R BUILTINUtilisateurs FILE_LIST_DIRECTORY FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES FILE_READ_EA FILE_TRAVERSE SYNCHRONIZE READ_CONTROL RW AUTORITE NTUtilisateurs authentifiÚs FILE_ADD_FILE FILE_ADD_SUBDIRECTORY FILE_LIST_DIRECTORY FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES FILE_READ_EA FILE_TRAVERSE FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES FILE_WRITE_EA DELETE SYNCHRONIZE READ_CONTROL --- Session Logs (OpenCL&sdk - PERMISSIONS) --- Medium Mandatory Level (Default) [No-Write-Up] RW BUILTINAdministrateurs FILE_ALL_ACCESS RW AUTORITE NTSystÞme FILE_ALL_ACCESS R BUILTINUtilisateurs FILE_LIST_DIRECTORY FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES FILE_READ_EA FILE_TRAVERSE SYNCHRONIZE READ_CONTROL RW AUTORITE NTUtilisateurs authentifiÚs FILE_ADD_FILE FILE_ADD_SUBDIRECTORY FILE_LIST_DIRECTORY FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES FILE_READ_EA FILE_TRAVERSE FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES FILE_WRITE_EA DELETE SYNCHRONIZE READ_CONTROL Solution - Fix & Patch: ======================= For users who are able to update their systems, Intel recommends updating to the 2019 Beta Release or later. Updates are available for download at this location: https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2018/10/05/2019-opencl-sdk-whats-new Security Risk: ============== The security risk of the local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Intel Media Server Studio software for microsoft windows is estimated as medium.
